Boating Blue Mesa

Blue Mesa Reservoir, which is part of Curecanti National Recreation Area, is the largest in Colorado, which means abundant recreation and fun on-the-water opportunities in the countries highest state. Yet after 25+ years of living in Colorado, we have never enjoyed the water.

The drive from Gunnison to Montrose along US 50 includes a long stretch of road along both sides of Colorados largest reservoir, Blue Mesa, which is also home to Curecanti National Recreation Area.

We have driven this route dozens of times, yet never took the opportunity to get out on the water. After a record snow and rain year from 2022-2023, we decided it was time to remedy that.

Boat rentals are available from either Marina, but since we were coming from our Basecamp Cabin in Buena Vista, we opted for Elk Creek Marina.

The 29 mile-long reservoir with 96 miles of shoreline that offers a variety of recreational activities, including motorboating, paddleboarding, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, waterskiing, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, and boat tours.

Our favorite formation that's visible from nearly anywhere on the lake is Dillon Pinnaccles.

It is a popular destination for boaters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The reservoir is stocked with millions of fish each year, making it a great place to fish for lake trout and kokanee salmon.

Blue Mesa Reservoir is also known for its strong afternoon winds, so boaters should be aware of the potential for hazardous conditions. Water temperatures remain cold through much of the season, so windsurfers and water skiers are advised to wear wet suits.

Overall, Blue Mesa Reservoir is a great place to visit for a variety of outdoor activities. With its stunning scenery and abundance of recreational opportunities, it is no wonder that Blue Mesa Reservoir is a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.
