Reef Snorkeling, Belize 2019 Part 4

Perhaps the most famous attraction in Belize is the Great Barrier reef, a Unesco World Heritage site:

"..the largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere, offshore atolls, several hundred sand cays, mangrove forests, coastal lagoons and estuaries"

The more populated San Pedro, on Ambergris Caye sits just about 1 mile from the Reef, but it's still not a far boat ride from Caye Caulker. The reef is devided into several sections, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve is further devided into 4 distinct areas.

Since we had little ones with us, we chose for a low-stress half-day tour from Stressless Eco Friendly Tours. There are dozens of tour companies on the Caye, but Stressless offered great reviews, a knowledgeable staff, and a focus on education versus a 'wild' time on the reef.

Keith and Ever (both born and raised on Caye Caulker) with Stressless Tours took the time to teach our group about the ecosystem that ensures the reef stays healthy. This includes the importance of mangroves and the threat to their continued destruction through development.

Stressless also runs an ethical tour. We witnessed other tour companies feeding fish to sharks and other marine life, which is not illegal but is not considered an ethical practice.

Our trip included stops to see seahorses, tarpin, and several stops along the reef. It was really great to see the children snorkel, even if it was for just a few minutes.
